COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gryphon Place is offering a new program that connects Kalamazooans with agencies to help stop gun violence – the Community Information Exchange takes referrals from the 211 service and local navigators to meet residents’ needs. The program is based at their new facility on 505 Park Street – officials say it will also build a database so local groups can more easily coordinate services.  WKZO

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A speeding SUV crashed at a Kalamazoo gas station when it veered off South Westnedge Avenue and hit two motorcycles, two vehicles, and a gas pump, injuring seven people—two of whom were taken to hospital, with one in critical condition.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, the City of Kalamazoo invites downtown businesses to apply for up to $25,000 in reimbursement grants through the state’s Match on Main program. Businesses must be for-profit with 25 or fewer employees and offer face-to-face sales—meeting this criteria—and must submit a pre-application form by March 28 at 5:00 p.m., with awards announced on June 26.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 23 year old man was shot and killed in Kalamazoo’s Northside neighborhood on March 18 and was taken to a local hospital by a private vehicle.  MLive
  • Late Tuesday night, officers responded at 10:43 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the 1100 block of Cadillac Street and found evidence including shell casings and a bullet hole before a 23-year-old man, who was transported by a private vehicle to a local hospital, was pronounced dead at 11:13 p.m. + no suspect has been identified.  WKZO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County plans a $40 million youth sports center to host basketball and volleyball tournaments and create new opportunities for local youth. The project will move forward after county approval in May and is expected to open by late 2025 or early 2026.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan held a statewide tornado drill on Wednesday afternoon — the sirens sounded at 1 p.m. across the state as schools, businesses, and households took part in Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Kalamazoo County officials recalled a severe tornado in Portage in May 2024 and urged residents to check their safety plans.  WWMT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A new Korean-American fusion restaurant called Dak Good opened in Portage about three weeks ago and will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, March 21—its menu offers fried chicken with Korean twists and other unique dishes. General Manager Cher Liu said plans include a second location in Muskegon.  MLive
