- ➤ The Portage Department of Public Safety is hosting its annual Stuff a Fire Truck donation drive on Sunday, Dec. 14 at Sam's Club in Portage where local residents can drop off nonperishable food, personal care items and supplies for Twelve Baskets Food Pantry that helps 400 families weekly. WWMT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Christopher Nurrie Jr., 29, who had recently been discharged from hospital after a neck infection surgery, was found unresponsive in the snow at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park near the local shelter on Dec. 10 and pronounced dead, prompting calls from family and community for more housing support. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Western Michigan University’s fall commencement is today, with over 1,100 seniors set to receive diplomas from 37 nations. Business & Fine Arts, Health & Human Services, and Education students begin at 9 a.m. while Arts & Sciences, Merze Tate, Engineering, and Aviation ceremonies start at noon in Miller Auditorium. WKZO

- ➤ Dr. William Nettleton, the medical director for local and Calhoun county health services, urged parents to continue giving babies the Hepatitis B birth dose and warned that delaying it—despite a federal committee's recent vote—offers no health benefits and may expose newborns to the illness. - ➤ Family Health Center’s Alcott Street location alerted patients who received dental care from Nov. 3 to Nov. 6 to get blood tests for Hepatitis and HIV after a sterilization error on Nov. 5 + the center is covering testing and working with health officials while enhancing training to prevent future issues.
