- ➤ Portage Northern High School students raised a record $33,700 via their annual Bread Lift fundraiser on Nov. 22, benefiting Bronson Children’s Hospital’s pediatric and oncology unit. The long-standing tradition has helped Portage Public Schools collect over $600,000 in funds over its 60-year history. WKZO
- ➤ The Autism Alliance of Michigan released a report Tuesday that shows major gaps in public school special education. Analyzing over 50 indicators such as academic outcomes and funding, it offers a baseline for policymakers ahead of the Special Education Advocacy Summit — coinciding with the 50th anniversary of IDEA. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Holtec International received $400 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to complete two SMR-300 reactors at the Palisades nuclear plant in Covert Township; the reactors, each generating 300 megawatts, are expected to support 300 full-time jobs and help restart the decommissioned plant. - ➤ The Kalamazoo County board passed a resolution today declaring the housing shortage a public health crisis — noting that insecure housing and homelessness threaten low-income residents and directing the Housing and Health departments to produce an annual report on these concerns. WKZO
- ➤ Officials issued a boil water advisory on Dec. 3 in north Kalamazoo due to infrastructure work on North 14th Street that lowered water pressure. The advisory covers water customers on several streets and will lift within 72 hours, so residents should boil tap water for two minutes or use bottled water. WWMT
