COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kalamazoo will host a holiday tree lighting and Holly Jolly Trolley event at Bronson Park on Friday, Nov. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. The festivities will include musical performances, ice sculpting, craft activities for kids and visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus — South Street will be closed for the event and the trolley will offer free rides downtown.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • KzFV revived the historic Michigan News Agency for its final Black Friday sale after longtime owner Dean Hauck passed away — the store will offer 50% off merchandise on November 28th and 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with proceeds set to fund future development including a new mural.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Otsego Public Schools removed a book with gay characters from kindergarten and did not add two books about Islam to first grade reading materials, following district guidelines to keep content age-appropriate—ensuring materials support student learning. Administrators said the reviews were done this fall to align the curriculum with developmental standards.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • West Michigan is under a Winter Storm Warning through at least Thursday morning. Residents can seek shelter and warmth at centers such as Ministry with Community and Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries in Kalamazoo—Westminster Presbyterian Church and Portage District Library in Portage—and Haven of Rest Ministries in Battle Creek, each with its own hours and requirements.  WWMT
  • Residents and environmentalists in the Winchell area have long opposed a proposed mega car wash near the Asylum Lake Preserve—fearing potential contamination—and have collected over 14,000 signatures urging the city to purchase the lot and keep it vacant.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Safety first responders have prepared for the season's first winter storm and urge drivers to slow down on slick, high-wind roads—fire trucks are stocked with fuel and rescue gear for quick responses to crashes and power outages.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo County plans to bring back a full-blown county fair next summer with rides and food booths if a carnival contract is secured, and a new organizing committee will replace the old fair board to work more nimbly. The fair is set for August 2nd to 8th with a tentative $400,000 budget and plans to hire a fair coordinator and seasonal staff—any interested local group may offer to take charge.  WKZO
