COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Students, families and staff from Vicksburg Community Schools filled a school bus with food and personal care items for local families. The Vicksburg High School National Honor Society will unload the donations today at 2:30 p.m.—they will be delivered to South County Services and Generous Hands for local distribution.  WKZO
  • Women leaders in Kalamazoo organized a Thanksgiving food drive to provide 200 meals for families facing food insecurity amid SNAP delays — monetary donations are being collected until Thursday, November 20. Donated funds will fund meal kits with turkey, stuffing and other staples — these kits will be delivered on Sunday, November 23.  WWMT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday evening, community members gathered on the Mattawan Consolidated School District lawn to pray after 10-year-old Jace Sargent was struck by a car in Porter Township four days earlier—authorities said the school district provided grief counseling while the sheriff’s office continued to investigate the crash.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Outfitters is a free boutique on the second floor of North Kohrman Hall that gives WMU students two workwear items when they show proof of a career event. The store, supported by career services and community donations, aims to boost student confidence—helping them dress professionally without added cost.  MLive

FINANCE NEWS

  • A Portage lottery player won $3 million in the Mega Millions drawing Friday by matching five white balls, according to the Michigan Lottery. The ticket was bought from JJ Land LLC on West Centre Avenue, and prizes must be claimed within one year.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday night, nearly 2,000 Consumers Energy customers in southwestern Kalamazoo lost power after an equipment issue+by 8:30 p.m., power returned to all but 850 customers.  WWMT
  • The Kalamazoo County Treasurer’s Office is launching a home-buying grant program that gives eligible residents up to $5,000 plus an extra $2,000 from Independent Bank to help cover down payments and closing costs—applicants must meet income guidelines and complete pre-purchase counseling to qualify.  WKZO
  • City leaders hosted a grand opening on Monday for a new 8,900-square-foot building at Kalamazoo Farmers Market on Bank St. The facility — featuring a commercial kitchen and rental event space — will serve as the main Kzoo Parks after-school site and host winter markets starting Dec 6 through April 25 while honoring retired City Commissioner Don Cooney.  WWMT
  • Michigan now offers a new state license plate honoring women veterans—featuring an illustration of a veteran with the words 'Her Service Our Freedom.' The plate is the 33rd design—recognizing over 44,000 women veterans who make up 9 percent of Michigan’s veteran population.  WKZO
