COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An old TikTok video from September 2024 showing a confrontation with a homeless woman at Second Reformed Church in Kalamazoo drew heavy criticism after its recent posting and gained over 5 million views. Church officials say they are working with local groups (including organizations that support the homeless) to address the issue and clarify their commitment to compassion.  MLive
  • Veterans, families, and community members gathered at the Michigan Army National Guard Armory on Tuesday to honor those who served. The ceremony featured music, marches, silence, and speeches from local leaders and veterans — who stressed that every veteran deserves proper care — before a final rendition of America the Beautiful closed the event.  WWMT
  • The Salvation Army of Kalamazoo will launch its bell-ringing season with the Annual Red Kettle Kickoff this Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Blain’s Farm and Fleet in Portage—volunteers including Mayor David Anderson and a brass band will help raise funds for programs that support families in need.  WKZO
  • Michigan News Agency, a well-loved downtown bookstore that closed after owner Dean Hauck died on Feb. 8, will reopen for a final sale on Nov. 22, 28 and 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 308 W. Michigan Ave and will offer 50% discounts while proceeds are reinvested in community development—Kalamazoo Forward Ventures purchased the historic property in July for $515,000.  MLive
  • Oshtemo Township firefighter Charlie Sullivan, who died in a fiery motorcycle crash last Wednesday, will be honored tomorrow with a public funeral at 11 a.m. at Kalamazoo First Assembly of God at 5550 Oakland Drive—his body will be escorted by fire trucks at noon to Fieldstone Grille for a private wake later that afternoon.  WKZO

  • Farmers Alley Theatre in Kalamazoo will present 'A Very Kalamazoo Christmas', a satirical holiday comedy by local playwright Robert Hawlmark that parodies Hallmark formulas with local twists—its 90-minute performance opens Thursday, Nov. 20 and runs through Dec. 14 with nightly shows at 7:30 p.m., matinees on weekends, and a special ASL performance on Friday, Nov. 28.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 1,200 ninth grade students from Kalamazoo Public Schools will join WMU’s Bronco Buds program tomorrow and next Thursday to experience a day in a WMU student's life. The daylong event starts with a pep rally at Read Fieldhouse, followed by lunch at Valley Dining Center and academic tours for interests like nursing and business — officials say it prepares students for college.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Centrica Care Navigators in Kalamazoo is calling on veteran volunteers to serve as companions for veterans in hospice care. The nonprofit trains volunteers to share their experiences—helping bridge understanding when family support is limited.  WWMT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The city of Portage will hold two meetings on Nov 20 at 5:30 p.m. and on Nov 21 at noon at Portage City Hall for people interested in buying a home in the Stanwood Crossings project. The sessions will explain how buyers who earn 80% to 120% of the county median income can qualify for one of the 42 workforce housing homes built with ARPA funds and local grants—land will be held in a community land trust.  WWMT

  • Five Kalamazoo-area high school football teams will compete in the state playoffs as they aim to advance to regional finals after a district final held on Nov. 7 in Portage—teams are expected to put everything on the line to secure playoff spots.  MLive
