Good morning, Kalamazoo. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 9th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gloria is a two-year-old Chihuahua at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan who is looking for her forever home. SPCA Executive Director Katie Timber said Gloria is playful, enjoys car rides, and would suit families with children eight and older (photo taken November 7) (fixed, vaccinated, microchipped).  WWMT
  • Volunteers rallied Saturday at Meijer on South Westnedge Avenue to support local pantries as SNAP benefits paused, organized by Indivisible Greater Kalamazoo. The group will hold more food drives through winter — urging residents to donate food or time — to aid Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes and United for the Unsheltered.  WWMT
  • The Blue Star Mothers of America held their 19th annual Operation Holiday Cheer packing event in Paw Paw on Saturday to support our troops. Volunteers packed donated items — non-perishable foods, toiletries and medicine — for shipping overseas, and the group is now seeking help to cover shipping costs.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Members of the Joseph B. Westnedge Chapter Sons of the American Revolution hosted a ceremony Saturday at the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners to honor Revolutionary War soldier Thomas Campbell—also known as Camel—by unveiling a plaque that marks his service and legacy. Born around 1760 into slavery, Campbell earned his freedom by fighting at Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth, later marrying, having children, and settling near Hickory Corners before dying in 1849.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials and state leaders marked the opening of a new U.S. 131 interchange with the U.S. 131 Business Route on Nov. 7—after nearly 25 years of planning—to create new ramps and bridges that lessen heavy truck traffic and boost economic opportunities. The $19 million project will reduce congestion on downtown streets and improve safety for local residents.  MLive
  • After the U.S. Supreme Court issued an emergency stay Friday night that blocked full November SNAP payments for roughly 42 million low-income Americans, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services paused SNAP EBT benefits—payments will remain on hold until further action by the USDA or courts.  WKZO
