COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials from God's Kitchen of Michigan announced they are canceling the Thanksgiving dinner in Kalamazoo due to an alarming lack of donations—though the Battle Creek meal will still continue.  WKZO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan drivers paid 10 cents less per gallon today than last week — the statewide average is $2.97 while Kalamazoo County recorded an average of $2.99.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Comstock Public School District has faced a bus driver shortage that led to canceled routes and lower attendance for many students. The transportation supervisor has driven buses himself and the district has added new GPS and tablet systems to help manage routes—though the challenge of hiring drivers continues.  WWMT
  • A new statewide report finds that Michigan’s special education funding system leaves students with disabilities at a disadvantage because local wealth creates large gaps in support—especially in poorer districts. The Blueprint, created by over 1,000 educators, families and advocates, recommends a need-based formula with more transparency—state leaders will review the proposal in the coming months.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting today, Kalamazoo residents can drop off their leaves at the city dump site at 322 East Stockbridge Avenue until December 12—open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. City Manager Jim Ritsema said homeowners with late leaves should follow their neighborhood’s curbside schedule or call for a pickup request through December 23.  WKZO

  • A Player of the Week poll invites locals to vote for one of 21 top football players from the opening playoff round that saw standouts like Kalamazoo United senior Jackson Herder shine on Oct 31 at Mattawan High School — the poll spotlights notable performances that set the tone for the postseason.
