COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage and Kalamazoo Metro are partnering for the urgent Stuff the Bus food drive to support Twelve Baskets as SNAP benefits are set to be suspended this Saturday. Residents can drop off non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products (no fresh food or meat) at Portage City Hall until November 6 at 5:30 p.m. with a Metro bus delivering the donations on Friday, November 7.  WKZO
  • Franklin Partners LLC halted plans to build a data center in Pavilion Township after community members raised concerns over rising electricity costs and water use for cooling—township board meetings have removed the project from further discussion until the company reviews other options.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Schools teachers received a 4% pay increase — approved at a board meeting on Oct. 29 — and a $650 planning time stipend that retroactively applies from the start of the school year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to the government shutdown entering its 30th day, Michigan’s 1.47 million SNAP users will see their benefits paused starting Saturday because federal funds have lapsed. Local food banks in West Michigan, including Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, are available to help residents get food.  WWMT
  • During a public hearing last Thursday, residents in Comstock Township voiced serious concerns over a proposed rezoning to allow a lithium-ion battery energy storage site as they feared risks like lithium fires and chemical leaks near homes and schools. Commissioners tabled the ordinance—pending further research—and scheduled a follow-up public hearing on Nov. 13 and a workshop on Nov. 20.  WWMT

  • SNAP helped low-income families buy groceries with a monthly EBT card load as benefits were spread from the 1st to the 21st, though many families spent their funds early—Associate Professor Kate Bauer explained that households earning below $41,600 relied on an average $335 benefit as a lifeline.  WWMT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo City Centre building at 125 S. Kalamazoo Mall was sold on Oct. 21 to Harvin Singh Sandhu and his family for $2.21M; the six‐story property will keep its current tenants while adding new shared workspaces and a planned Raw Strength gym. The building’s event space held a grand reopening on Oct. 30 — now set to host a Halloween party today — and Old Skool restaurant is expected to open later this year.  MLive

  • Kalamazoo College head football coach Jamie Zorbo announced he will step down after the 2025 season—he will keep his role as athletic director while a national search for his successor begins.  WKZO
  • Ex-CMU players Javarius Sims and Cade Conley will face former teammates when WMU takes on Central Michigan at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both players have left behind symbols of their past—Sims even tore up his maroon shorts—as they prepare to compete in one of the state’s toughest football rivalries.  MLive
  • Sam Dietzel drilled the game-winning penalty kick in the match against Clarkston—helping Portage Central reach its first state final—after the team settled the game with a penalty shootout on Wednesday.  MLive
