Good morning, Kalamazoo. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 30th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Michigan University will soon start a free pilot shuttle service for business students traveling between campus and downtown on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. WMU students need only show their student ID to ride free and the project, funded by community partners (Monroe Brown Foundation, Hall Foundation for Downtown Initiatives, The United Way, and Sleeping Giant Capital), will later expand to daily service.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo city officials adopted a West Gateway Plan on Oct. 20 to transform the unsafe 'spaghetti bowl' into a walkable corridor with mixed-use buildings, improved streets and upgraded utilities that will connect downtown with nearby colleges. The proposal calls for flood mitigation work and phased development starting in 2027—steps that will encourage investment—and local business owners are already assessing the plan.  MLive
