COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Oshtemo Township opposed plans for a battery storage facility near homes by NewEdge because they fear a fire could force evacuations and release toxic fumes. Township officials said current zoning rules do not allow such land use (residents have organized a petition and online campaign) but state law may let developers bypass local rules if no change is made.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo mother Taneka Dumas organized the launch of M.O.M.S. after her son was fatally shot while working security in April at Green Door Distilling Co.—she gathered 20 mothers at a kickoff event on Oct 24 to raise funds for grief counseling and court support, with monthly meetings to follow at First United Baptist Church.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Signs are up at the Raising Cane’s on Westnedge Ave — though construction materials and vehicles still surround the site — and the restaurant will open in January instead of October as originally planned. The building’s exterior appears complete while work continues around the site.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parchment School District is asking voters to approve a $32.35M bond in the November 4 election after a costlier proposal was rejected in May+ the funds will cover HVAC upgrades and safety improvements at three elementary schools with a 1.02 mill net tax increase due in 2026.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo residents are speaking out against a proposed car wash near Asylum Lake Nature Preserve, warning that chemicals from the wash may harm the nearby environment. Drive and Shine Car Wash, which owns the 19 acres of land zoned for single-family homes, submitted a new rezoning request and held a public meeting last night to present their case.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage and City Wise Software have launched a new rental website that makes it easier for local landlords to list verified rental properties and for residents to find housing — the tool is built for Portage’s market. The site offers free listings for landlords with fewer than 20 units, quick setup, and extra support for larger property managers.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo County officials are planning to bring back the fair in 2026 at the County Expo Center with rides, food and games. They spent $100,000 on a feasibility study and will request proposals with a starting budget of $50,000 as surveys show strong community interest in a carnival and food vendors.  MLive

  • News Channel 3’s Football Fever covered the ninth week of high school football by reporting Friday night’s scores from local games. Scores were updated as the games ended—showing close victories and competitive matchups.  WWMT
  • The final week of high school football in Kalamazoo begins today with key games, including the rivalry match between Kalamazoo Central and Loy Norrix that could shape playoff spots, and several local teams battling in crucial SAC contests. Player of the Week *Tyler McCartney* helped Lawton win last week with 180 yards and three touchdowns, setting the stage for tonight’s contests.  MLive
  • Portage Central soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit to win its first regional championship since 1991 with a 2-1 overtime victory over East Kentwood at Hudsonville High School on Thursday — they will play in the Division 1 state semifinal next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lansing Eastern’s Athletic Fields.  MLive
