COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local journalists will meet community members at the Kalamazoo Public Library downtown branch at 315 S. Rose St on Oct. 16 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Marie Lee will moderate a panel of six reporters who will answer questions on community development issues.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pizza Hut returned its popular personal pan pizza deal starting Tuesday with one-topping pizzas priced at $3—a 50% increase from the summer deal. Customers can add extra toppings for an upcharge and order up to six pizzas per carryout order—while supplies last.  MLive
  • Yesterday, Meta announced that teen accounts on Instagram were set to display PG-13 content to block explicit images, unsafe language, and mature themes. The new policy prevents users under 18 from following accounts that share age-inappropriate posts+ changes cannot be made without a parent's permission.  WWMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Vicksburg officials say that Burg Days of Summer has boosted local business and drawn up to 4,500 visitors on Wednesdays — increasing sales at retail stores, pubs, restaurants, bars and taverns by between 40% and 50% while Friday and Saturday events have seen gains of about 7% to 8%. Todd Glenn of Jaspare’s Pizza reported a rise in sales and is now calling for similar winter events.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hopkins Public Schools school psychologist Becca Drozd in Allegan County is being honored by the Michigan Lottery with the Excellence in Education award—she receives a $2,000 prize and may earn an additional $10,000 as Educator of the Year. Nominated by her district special education director, she has nine years in education and earned degrees from Hope College and the University of Detroit Mercy.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Kalamazoo will soon be able to use the new US‑131 bridges near KL Avenue and the Amtrak Trail as MDOT shifts southbound traffic with single-lane closures starting today at 7 p.m. that last through 3 p.m. Thursday—after the shift, crews will remove temporary lanes while KL Avenue stays closed for winter until it reopens in late summer.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo veterans from World War Two, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War returned after taking a Talons Out Honor Flight to Washington, DC—visiting national monuments and paying respects at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery—while plans for another trip in May are underway.  WKZO

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new 42-home development in Portage aims to create long-term affordable housing for average earners who have been priced out. The community—Stanwood Crossings—features four floor plan styles on a large lot off Portage Road between Stanley Avenue and Woodbine Avenue with two houses completed in late September and more units planned under the city's land trust.  MLive
  • Friendship Village Kalamazoo will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, Oct 20 at 3:00 p.m.—the $86.67 million project will add a 68-unit independent living building, a 40-bed nursing facility, and renovations to the Commons Building on Drake Road—with local officials and community partners expected to attend.  WKZO
