COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An affiliate of Black Bear Sports Group has taken over the shuttered Wings West and is investing in repairs to reopen the rink in time for the 2026—27 season. Discover Kalamazoo has begun a feasibility study to ensure enough ice is available for local teams before the planned 2028 closure of Wings Event Center.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Library is hosting Geek Fest at the Kalamazoo Expo Center on Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will feature robotics, games, comic books and cosplays — with special guest actor Kimberly Woods.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Stink bugs are looking for warm spots this fall — many enter homes during September and October, so residents should seal cracks around doors, windows and roof lines to keep them out. Expert Tony Sorrentino from Pest Pros of Michigan said that creating a protective barrier helps reduce the chance of these invasive bugs settling in.  WWMT

  • The city of Kalamazoo is asking residents and visitors to complete the Downtown Vitality Study survey online, open until October 31—this survey by the city and Western Michigan University will guide improvements in parking, traffic, safety, and business access downtown.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo officials announced four finalists for the City Manager position after a Monday closed session reviewing anonymized applications; residents can meet the candidates on Oct. 15 in City Hall’s Commission Chambers—feedback submitted before the Commission’s vote on Oct. 20 will help decide the top choice.  WWMT
  • Ten candidates are running for three open seats on the Kalamazoo City Commission — only one incumbent, Stephanie Hoffman, remains as business owners, community advocates and political newcomers share views on housing and downtown issues.
