  • Community supporters rallied on Tuesday at Kalamazoo Public Schools to back a 15-year-old Kalamazoo Central football player who faced death threats after his play on Sept 18 fractured a Stevensville Lakeshore player's spine — his father and organizers stressed the need for therapy as the district schedules a discipline review today at 6:30 p.m. and another meeting on Oct 14 at 6:30 p.m.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dan and Holly Carmichael bought the historic Kalamazoo State Theatre on S. Burdick St.—it closed in November 2024 and will reopen in 2027 to mark its 100th year. The purchase also included Harvey’s on the Mall while The Grazing Table plans to relocate.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Kalamazoo unveiled $3.6M redesign plans for Arcadia Creek Festival Place in an open house Tuesday night—residents saw the design and construction timeline. Construction will begin in spring after a bid is accepted—city leaders said extra grants will be sought if costs rise.  WWMT
  • Today, Michigan lawmakers passed a budget bill to avoid a government shutdown after long negotiations—recording a 103-4 vote at approximately 1:48 a.m. before sending it to the governor for final approval.  WWMT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • ZERØ, a sober-friendly bar, opened on Sept. 30 inside the Marketplace at 202 S. Kalamazoo Mall—this venue offers handcrafted nonalcoholic drinks, live music twice a week, trivia Tuesday nights, and candle making demonstrations in its front windows to serve those who prefer a no-drink experience.  MLive
