  • Reggie's Pizza Bistro opened on Sept 19 and quickly became known for its 'Johnny Beesting' pizza made with local ingredients — owners Nick Chewie and Blake Kovacs, Kalamazoo locals with strong culinary backgrounds, joined forces after Chewie recovered from a life-changing crash.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kalamazoo Central junior varsity game turned dangerous when one player jumped on another and broke his spine, and a concerned parent said racial slurs and online threats were made — police and school officials are investigating — with the player disciplined under MHSAA rules.  WWMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • At AcMoody Farms in Union City, farmers are harvesting tomatoes and are 70% complete with their Red Gold contract amid heavy rains that brought two to five inches to parts of West Michigan—one sign of recent change. However, drought conditions persist in many areas—forcing farmers to rely on heavy irrigation as little rain is forecast for the rest of the week.  WWMT

  • Meijer donated $500K to build a new food marketing hub in Schneider Hall at WMU that will serve 75 students and offer training in food industry skills — the space features flexible work stations for classes and student groups.  MLive
  • Starting Oct. 1, some Kalamazoo-area districts will require families who do not meet income guidelines to pay for student meals as state funding for free meals ends, which could leave children hungry and teachers struggling. School leaders say districts without federal Community Eligibility Provision funding will see fewer meals served as rising food prices add extra strain on families.  MLive

  • Portage is selling its vacant office building to Kalamazoo County for $600,000—$145,000 less than the price paid two years ago. The building served as a donation center after the May 2024 tornado.  MLive
  • Today, the staff at Kalamazoo Water Reclamation Plant are marking their 70th anniversary with events from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — a ceremony is scheduled at 1 p.m. as the facility, which began cleaning wastewater in 1955, highlights its advanced powdered activated carbon process for treating industrial waste.  WKZO

  • Ken and Katie Schneider run Little Pistol Farms on their expanded Oshtemo Township land where they planted 16,000 pumpkins in 24 varieties including 600 pound giants for weekend family pick-up through Halloween.
