  • God's Kitchen of Michigan is launching its 2025 Holiday Fundraiser to raise $10,000 for free Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for needy families in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. Donations are tax-deductible and can be mailed to P.O. Box 2632 or given online while sponsors can call 2696158080 for support.  WKZO
  • WMU hockey coach Pat Ferschweiler and NASCAR driver Carson Hocevar will be featured — respectively as the keynote speaker and live auction helper — at the Drive for Life Foundation Gala today at 5:30 p.m. at the Radisson Plaza, which benefits the American Cancer Society and other local charities.  WWMT

  • The Soil Friends farm now opens its cider tasting room amid a costly fight with the township—Ben Martin, the newly elected township supervisor, described the effort as 'very, very satisfying.'  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WMU brought its brown and yellow display to the Lansing state capitol on Sept. 24, 2025 when president Russ Kavalhuna, students, faculty, and staff met with lawmakers to show the school’s programs, public service, research, and the men’s hockey championship trophy—proving the school’s strong state ties.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portage City Council purchased shelter structures for a new farmers market next to the Portage Zhang Senior Center for $1.39 million. Construction of three open-air pavilions and a parking lot will begin this fall — the council will vote on a contractor on October 7.  WKZO
  • Voters in the Parchment School District will decide on Nov. 4 on a $32.3M bond proposal that would raise taxes by 2.95 mills. The funds will be used to upgrade school facilities—improving roofs, windows, safety features and ADA compliance.  WWMT
  • The city of Portage is planning a program to offer down payment assistance to employees earning less than 120% of the area median income with help from Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services and county partners. The council has given its approval to set up a $100,000 fund—shared by Portage and Housing for All Millage—to help retain and attract city workers to live in the community they serve.  WKZO
  • Legislative leaders and officials from Governor Whitmer’s administration say they are working on the state’s next fiscal year budget so that schools will remain funded as gas pump tax revenues go to road repairs. They must reach a deal before Tuesday to prevent a state government shutdown next Wednesday.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kalamazoo could face an ice shortage in a few years after Wings West closed its two ice sheets and Wings Event Center will shut down three sheets when a new downtown center opens in 2028. Councilmember Nicole Miller said there is no set plan for Lawson Ice Arena—this may hurt local teams and reduce hotel revenue.  WKZO
