- ➤ Residents in Kalamazoo will join a festival-style block party and groundbreaking on Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. at Water Street outside the Radisson Plaza Hotel to celebrate the new downtown event center—set to open by Fall with seats between 6500 and 8000 for sports, concerts and community events. WWMT

- ➤ ZERØ Non-Alcoholic Bar will open this fall at 202 S. Kalamazoo Mall inside The Marketplace—joining Kalamazoo Candle Company—and it will serve zero-proof cocktails, live music and events in a welcoming space. The bar will run from 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday and 4 to 11 p.m. Thursday to Saturday as it nods to its past with wood salvaged from the former V&A Bootery. MLive

- ➤ Southwest Michigan schools must give extra classroom time to English language learners who score low on the WIDA exam and may hire more bilingual teachers under new state rules. School officials say state funds are available to help certify teachers plus all districts have four years to meet the staffing requirements. WWMT
