COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the Kalamazoo ice sports community have started an online petition after news that Wings West will close on September 12 due to a severe ice plant failure and that Wings Event Center is set to close in early 2028. The petition with hundreds of signatures calls on local leaders to reconsider the closures to keep local ice programs alive.  WWMT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Career Connect Campus teachers filed a complaint with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission on Aug. 28, alleging that KRESA engaged in unfair labor practices by delaying a contract that addresses wages and discipline — the union claims that the current proposal leaves instructors without key benefits, including a needed 9% wage increase. KRESA stated it is negotiating in good faith as discussions continue over the contract terms.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo will start a three-year, $60M project on Monday, Sept. 8th to upgrade water treatment with advanced filtering that removes PFAS — a measure designed to meet tighter federal standards. The work includes a lane shift on East Michigan Avenue and rebuilding Station 5 — ensuring safe drinking water for residents.  MLive

  • Kalamazoo County Chief Deputy Treasurer Tyler White is watching today's federal jobs report—he relies on federal data to guide county investments expected to earn $7.3 million in interest and worries that new political pressures may affect the numbers.  WKZO
