CRIME NEWS

  • Consumers Energy warns local residents about a scam where callers demand immediate payment using prepaid debit cards—customers who receive such calls and emails should call 800-477-5050 if they suspect fraud or need assistance.  WWMT
  • KDPS officers responded to a shooting near the intersection of Park and Hopkins on Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. and are canvassing the area after two people were injured while the suspects remain at large.  WWMT
  • A Kalamazoo woman testified that she faked her own death to survive a brutal attack by two assailants — she said that while fading in and out of consciousness she asked them to place her outside when she could not fight back.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Kalamazoo will begin a three-year, $60-million water system upgrade on Monday, September 8, that will build a 15,000-square-foot treatment facility to remove contaminants and replace aging water mains along Michigan Avenue, Wallace Avenue, and Elder Street — the project will include lane shifts and street closures and is expected to be completed by November 2028.  WKZO
  • Former Kalamazoo Township Fire Chief David Obreiter dismissed his lawsuit—filed over wrongful termination and false allegations—after reaching a settlement with former Township Manager Dexter Mitchell, which ended all legal challenges including a pending appeal. Details of their agreement remain confidential.  WWMT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • The County Road Association of Michigan released its list of the best fall color tours for 2025 and suggested three routes in Kalamazoo County—a 51-mile tour starting at 29th Street and Q Avenue in the east, a 45-mile tour beginning at 33rd Street and G Avenue in the north, and a 73-mile tour from 8th Street and O Avenue in the south. Peak fall color is expected from October 6 to November 8 with southwest Michigan at its best from October 25.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Comstock high school football team received a $15K grant from the Detroit Lions and new baby blue helmets days before starting its 2025 season. The team traveled to Ford Field for a game where they lost 34-8 to Homer—Coach Art Campione said the boost will help level the playing field for its players.  MLive
