- ➤ Kzoo Cream opened on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 1502 S. Westnedge Ave in Kalamazoo, serving secret family recipe cookies, including the signature Frosted Whispers, and soft-serve ice cream. Kristi Potts invested her life savings to launch her shop — she overcame funding challenges with support from the city and Michigan Women Forward and is now hiring culinary interns. MLive
- ➤ Hudsonville-based Kerkstra Portable Restroom Service acquired Best Way Disposal’s portable restroom division, expanding its operations to include Kalamazoo and Watervliet locations while offering luxury restroom trailers, handwashing stations and portable restrooms for events and construction sites. The company retained seven former employees and added two new positions to strengthen service in Lakeshore communities and southwest Michigan counties including Barry and Van Buren. MLive

- ➤ Brush the Block is underway in Kalamazoo as local artists paint three murals on the Metro Transit building, Northside Association, and Stamped Robin while window painting happens downtown this week. Today a NACD event features a live band from 6 to 8 p.m.—Art Hop offers a public art tour and live music at Bates Alley—and a bike tour and Brush the Block Party are planned for Saturday with closing ceremonies late Sunday. - ➤ Governor Whitmer announced that Tokyo-based auto supplier Astemo Ltd. will build a new regional headquarters in Wixom to add at least 200 jobs while keeping 175 current ones. The company chose Wixom over an Ohio site and will move operations ten miles east from its Farmington Hills location—boosting local business. WKZO
- ➤ Industrial services provider Clark Logic broke ground on a speculative industrial building with Wolverine Building Group on Wednesday morning at 7190 Beatrice Dr. in Kalamazoo. The 153,000 square foot facility (with 32-foot clear heights, 12 loading docks and two overhead doors) has no solid plans yet (tenant commitments are pending) and will support future local economic activity. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo residents will meet city manager candidates at a meet-and-greet on Oct. 14 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Catalyst Center—candidates will be interviewed on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall, and the commission plans to extend an offer at its Oct. 20 meeting. WWMT
- ➤ Kalamazoo County commissioners are worried about state budget cuts that would lower funding for state police, Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, and county revenue sharing—officials are urging lawmakers to stop these cuts while county Administrator Kevin Catlin prepares a new 2026 budget proposal as an unresolved House budget could force shutdowns and layoffs. - ➤ Kalamazoo Wings Event Center will close permanently in spring 2028 after Wings West is set to shut down on Sept. 12 due to an ice plant failure. Officials from the Kalamazoo Optimist Hockey Association warned that the facility closures may impact local youth hockey — while the city develops a $515 million downtown arena for future hockey teams.
