COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wings West in Kalamazoo will close after its ice plant failed and the arena's last day of service is Sept. 12—ice programs will move to Wings Event Center and every employee will be offered a new position by Greenleaf Hospitality Group. This longtime hub served local teams and families and will be remembered by the community.  WWMT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kristi Potts — a Kalamazoo native — opened her new KZOO Cream Frosted Whispers Cookies storefront Tuesday afternoon in the Vine neighborhood as local leaders and residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting. She offers cookies for a dollar along with dirty sodas, ice cream, and sandwiches and received key technical and financial support from Michigan Women Forward.  WWMT
  • Can-Do Kalamazoo opened its expanded facility at 519 South Park to offer business training and support for new entrepreneurs—providing essential tools for those with few resources. The hub plans to complete further renovations by 2027 in partnership with the city and local foundations.  WKZO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Kalamazoo is getting a colorful makeover this weekend as artists paint six new murals at key sites including Haymarket Plaza—Farmers Alley—Northside Association for Community Development and Stamped Robin. Muralists Heidi Weiss and Chafe Hensley are creating a collaborative piece inspired by local wildlife and landscapes.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Graphic Packaging’s paper mill settled a $5M lawsuit with Northside residents who said a toxic odor hurt property values and their health; the lawsuit was dismissed on Aug. 26 after nearly five years in court — the settlement ends long-standing disputes over the mill’s pollution. Residents had complained for years about the industrial smell and its effects on daily life.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo County commissioners are expected to vote tonight on updated bidding preference policy—designed to support local jobs and reduce favoritism—that applies only to contracts over $100,000 and sets extra rules for construction projects.  WKZO
  • Tonight, the Kalamazoo County Board will vote to opt in to two opioid settlement deals from Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Purdue Pharma—one providing about $417,000 and one providing roughly $1.3-million spread over 15 years. Board chair Jen Strebs said the funds will go directly into a drug recovery and prevention fund—supporting efforts against substance abuse as the board must decide by month’s end.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo’s WMUK public radio station lost its $178,000 federal support from last year and now faces a 10—20% drop in funding as it plans to hire two new staff for grant writing while leaving two positions vacant due to budget limits; the station is seeking new revenue sources after Congress cut public media funds.  MLive

  • Kalamazoo-area high school football stars shone in their first game when Portage Central beat East Lansing 45 to 0 on August 28, showcasing strong plays by sophomore Cam Noe—voters are now invited to choose among 25 local standouts for Week 1 Player of the Week.  MLive
