  • Kalamazoo musician Brian Koenigsknecht released his new single 'I'm Hungry' on Aug. 25 to raise funds for the local food pantry and reduce the stigma around child hunger—he was inspired by his time as a paraprofessional at Angling Road Elementary where he saw many students rely on free meals.  MLive
  • The News Channel 3 tower photo taken on August 21 in Kalamazoo is featured in the August Photo of the Month contest where readers are invited to vote for their favorite of eight submissions by Friday at 2 p.m.—results will be announced the following Monday.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Brush the Block festival transforms six blank walls downtown and on the Northside into murals starting today until Sept. 7—attendees ride the free Salvador Troli every 30 to 40 minutes between sites. Local artists will use bold designs and community themes to brighten Kalamazoo’s streets.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • On September 1, the COPE Network held its 8th Overdose Awareness Day rally in Bronson Park where people carried signs and shared personal stories about opioid overdoses. Nancy King, the group’s leader who lost her daughter to a heroin overdose, said the event aimed—by giving out free test strips and Narcan—to teach the public about harm reduction.  WWMT

  • WMU kicked off the men's soccer season when it hosted Soccer Fest Monday at its Soccer Complex—just before the Broncos play their first home game against New Hampshire. The event had live music, games, and face-painting to engage local youth and boost team spirit.  WWMT
