CRIME NEWS

  • The Better Business Bureau warns residents that scammers are using Social Security cost-of-living increase claims to steal personal information — the SSA only contacts by mail and texts, emails, or calls should be ignored.  WWMT
  • A 34-year-old man, Daniel Ray Partee, was arrested in Florida by Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, August 24 — for an open murder warrant linked to the 2023 Kalamazoo homicide of 43-year-old Kunta Tavarius Davis, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Kalamazoo Balloon Fest held Friday, August 22 at Gull Meadow Farms, pilot James Loiselle flew his rainbow-colored balloon 'Lucky' 1,000 feet above local farms and Sherman Lake. Local onlookers enjoyed the show—kids jumped and farmers paused as pilots honored tradition by offering champagne to homeowners after landing.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Drivers must watch for students and school buses today as yellow means prepare to stop and red flashing lights require stopping at least 20 feet away—Kalamazoo Public School buses record license plates and violations may incur fines of $100 to $500—penalties will increase if accidents result in injury or death.  WKZO
  • Western Michigan University unveiled an expanded walkway before classes began this week, turning a former parking lot into a park-like space with grass, sidewalk, and hammock pods near The Oaklands bed and breakfast — the $5.6 million project runs from the Gathering Tree statue to the intersection of Ring Road North and Michigan Avenue — and expands behind the WMU administration building.  WKZO
  • Starting this fall, Kalamazoo Public Schools will offer senior residents over 62 a Gold Card that gives discounted sports event admission—seniors showing valid ID at the Administration Building on Howard Street get free entry except for hockey games, invitational playoffs and tournament games.  WKZO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local high schools have improved football safety by buying Rydell Speedflex helmets and teaching safer tackling techniques to lower the risk of head injuries — the Michigan High School Athletic Association reported that signups reached an eight-year high last year — while WMU researchers continue to study the effects of repeated hits.  WWMT
