- ➤ Kalamazoo residents will join a free solar education event on August 28 at Bell's Eccentric Cafe—where local experts, clean energy pros and Helios Solar will explain how homeowners can install solar systems that save money and boost our climate goals. WWMT

- ➤ Andy Craigo and Hannah Rice revived SugarBowl Bar and Grille, one of Kalamazoo's last true dive bars, by adding bingo on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and live music on Fridays and Saturdays — they also expanded the beer selection and menu — and plan a metal show next week and an annual Hamm's Day on Oct. 11. - ➤ On Aug. 11, Horizon Bank opened its modern office in the 120-year-old Monroe Building at 151 E. Michigan Ave. in downtown Kalamazoo—after investing over $1 million to create private spaces for both personal and business banking services. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Starting Monday, middle and high school students at Kalamazoo Public Schools will pass through 17 high-tech weapon detectors as they enter campus, and campus safety officers will check bags that set off the detectors — the new system was funded by a $300,000 Michigan grant. WWMT
- ➤ Thousands of students are moving back into WMU dorms this week as a new school year begins, with construction on Golden Oaks Residence Hall set to add 1,000 beds and a newly renovated student center receiving national acclaim. The university named Russ Kavalhuna president on July 1 and classes start on August 27 — campus leaders expect expanded support services and opportunities for students. WWMT
