CRIME NEWS

  • At last night's meeting, Commissioner Stephanie Hoffman said three stray bullets from a rolling gunfight hit her home—one in her bathroom, one in her living room, and one in her garage—though she was not injured and said the incident has strengthened her resolve to fight gun violence.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo is recruiting a new city manager to replace Jim Ritsema, who will retire in November. Online applications with cover letters and resumes will be reviewed starting September 12 while five finalists will be invited for a meet—and–greet and interviews as the community survey remains open until midnight on August 24.  WKZO
  • U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders will speak at Miller Auditorium—1341 Theatre Drive—in Kalamazoo on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. as part of his free Fighting Oligarchy Tour, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the Rodeo Boys starting a performance at 6 p.m.; Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed will join Sanders on stage.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Life EMS Ambulance launched its Behavioral Health Transport Program in 2022 to move patients from hospitals to treatment centers using custom-designed SUVs—nine now with a tenth coming—and the service has completed over 7,000 rides that offer a more comfortable ride than traditional ambulances.  WWMT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Today at 1500 E. Kilgore Road, a developer is nearly done converting an old Residence Inn into 83 apartments called Kilgore Apartments even though the city pulled $400K in funding due to compliance concerns—officials say the project will continue.  MLive

  • Kalamazoo teen figure skater Khloe Felton, who has earned four gold medals and is one of the Midwest’s top ice dancers, will compete in the U.S. National Solo Dance Final in Salt Lake City from Sept. 11—14.  MLive
