BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Harvey’s on the Mall, a popular downtown bar and restaurant at 416 S. Burdick St., will close on Sept. 20 after more than 40 years in business. Owners Steve and Marie Blinn invite locals to visit in the coming weeks—sharing memories before the final call. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Myquan Deontae Rogers, 34, was sentenced to at least 28 years in prison on Monday, Aug. 18 for a shooting — the incident killed a WMU student and an unborn baby on an I-94 ramp near Kalamazoo. MLive
- ➤ A Kalamazoo County commissioner admitted to slapping her former partner during a May 23 dispute and will be sentenced on August 26 for a domestic violence charge—three other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal. WKZO
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Michigan gas prices dropped by 11 cents from last week and now average $3.12 a gallon as reported by Triple-A; in Kalamazoo County, prices are as low as $2.98—which is the lowest in the state compared to Ann Arbor's $3.22 a gallon. WKZO
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo Public Schools announced that fall classes starting next Monday will bring the use of weapons detectors at middle and high school entrances and a review of security protocols after classes begin. The district already requires adults to check in with ID—police and government officials must show valid warrants before interacting with students and staff. WKZO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo will withdraw city funding from a project that converts a motel on Kilgore Road into low-cost rental units after the developer failed to follow instructions—starting work before the required inspection and missing bid rules. Commissioners will vote to cancel a $400,000 loan and tax break for the project, and they will extend a contract with KNHS to finish 14 homes using federal COVID-19 recovery funds. WKZO
- ➤ Today, the Kalamazoo County board approved $15,000 in ARPA funding for the Finding Your Way Home Program—coordinated by Public Safety, ISK and the Gospel Mission—to offer bus rides for unhoused residents returning to their communities. Public safety officer Mary Miller said the program has already helped 67 individuals, including 36 this year. WKZO
