COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Washington Square, a bold new mural was painted by dozens of community volunteers and local artists over the weekend. The Edison Neighborhood Association organized the project and the intersection will be converted into a pedestrian scramble within the next week when new traffic signals are installed.  WWMT
  • Lunchtime Live returned on Friday at Bronson Park with food trucks, live music, games, a youth talent show, and an entrepreneur fair for kids and teens. The event will come back next Friday—Aug. 22—with its final show scheduled for Aug. 29.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • Kalamazoo Public Safety investigated a shooting early Friday on North Rose Street that injured a 29-year-old man; he was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo County Commissioner Tami Rey admitted she slapped the father of her child during a May 23 incident—Friday, Aug. 15, the court dismissed three felony charges while upholding a misdemeanor count.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city of Kalamazoo received a $15,500 grant from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to pay for a report that will check damage to City Hall from blue-green algae and salt near its doors. The report will also assess structural movement from the building's large blocks to guide future repairs.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department said that over 90% of K–12 students have received required back-to-school vaccinations—this rate is slightly above the state average but still below national levels. Officials said mobile health units help families overcome travel barriers to access vaccines.  WWMT
