COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A vibrant new mural was completed in the Edison neighborhood on Aug. 9th to mark safe diagonal crossing routes at the busy intersection of Portage Street and Washington Avenue. Painter Patrick Hershberger led 30 volunteers and one dog in the project—traffic lights will be retimed soon to slow cars and improve pedestrian safety.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Kierra Gardner, a Kalamazoo caregiver charged with fourth-degree child abuse after a four month old suffered severe burns from hot water during a bath at New Horizon Townhomes on Jan. 25, was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty while officials found the water heater was set to dangerously high temperatures.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kalamazoo received $15,500 from the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office to hire a contractor to assess its 1931 CityHall building, which has suffered algae, salt, and structural damage that cracked walls and made floors uneven— the report will guide city officials in planning future preservation treatments.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Several workers at the Portage Pfizer Global Supply plant experienced symptoms of potential exposure on Saturday, Aug. 9 and were taken to the hospital—MIOSHA is investigating the incident as details about the substance and production area remain unknown.  MLive

  • Thirty offensive players from the Kalamazoo area are ready to show their skills as local high school teams prep for the 2025 football season—game action will begin in just over two weeks.  MLive
