- ➤ Today, a new authority held its first meeting in Kalamazoo to plan the construction and operation of a youth sports tournament center. Local officials and experts will work to open courts for community use on non-tournament days — the project is set to align with the downtown sports center opening in 2027. WKZO
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ An SUV hit an Amish buggy on County Road 388 just before 8 p.m. Friday, injuring six people—one in critical condition—and police said speed and alcohol were factors as the driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated. WKZO
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo police will execute a search warrant on North Rose Street near West Main Street on Wednesday and will seize over an ounce of meth, an unregistered firearm + evidence of drug manufacturing, distribution and money believed to be drug profits while a 41-year-old man with previous felony convictions will face multiple felony charges. - ➤ Deputies with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office are seeking a 36-year-old man accused of possibly sexually assaulting and physically assaulting a 38-year-old woman and stealing her vehicle after they left a local establishment Friday night and arrived at the Extended Stay America Hotel on South 11th Street in Oshtemo Township—her vehicle was later located near his last known residence, and she was hospitalized in stable condition—while there remains no known public threat. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Drivers statewide pay ten cents more per gallon than last week, with Triple-A Michigan reporting an average of $3.23 and noting Kalamazoo County prices are as low as $3.06 (regional rates vary from $3.29 in Ann Arbor to $3.05 in Marquette). A 15-gallon fill-up costs about $48 on average. WKZO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo city commissioners held a special meeting yesterday at City Hall at 5 p.m. to meet with the firm searching for a new city manager — Mayor Jeanne Hess led the subcommittee and outlined next steps. WKZO
- ➤ The water at the county Health and Community Services Department building is unsafe to drink, so bottled water has been used since last year. County commissioners rejected a proposal to reallocate $400,000 from unused ARPA funds to repair the copper pipes on Alcott Street and asked Administrator Kevin Catlin to seek new funding ideas—he said there is too much copper for EPA regulations while Commissioner Tammy Ray argued the funds should benefit the community.
