- ➤ A new storybook trail honoring Anne Coombs opens behind St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Lawton with 10 storybook stations, fantasy villages and free children’s books available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.—the trail debuted with a community pig roast on Aug. 3 and will host monthly events for local families. - ➤ On Aug. 9, the Salvation Army of Kalamazoo hosted its Stuff the Bus event outside Walmart on Gull Road to collect school supplies and monetary donations for local teachers and families in need. Volunteers gathered donations from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the supplies will support those from the Teacher Tailgate event + help families struggling with bills and rent. WWMT

- ➤ Kalamazoo police responded at 2 a.m. early Saturday to a fiery crash near Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street, where a 24-year-old man died after being trapped in his burning vehicle—authorities are now searching for a second driver and passenger and believe alcohol may be a factor. MLive

- ➤ Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office said on Saturday, Aug. 9 that a man assaulted a 38-year-old woman at Extended Stay America Hotel in Oshtemo Township and then stole her car and belongings—investigators believe the attack was targeted as the victim knew the suspect. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, Aug. 9, the Kalamazoo Literacy Council hosted its 14th annual Scrabble Fest—an event that served as both a tournament and a fundraiser to boost adult literacy resources. Michael Evans said the event supports adults, including the roughly 13% who read at a fourth-grade level, in reaching their full potential. WWMT

- ➤ Officials completed a $7M project on Aug. 7 that restored a 0.8-mile stretch of the Kalamazoo River in Plainwell near M-89 and U.S. 131 by removing dam parts and repairing the habitat; more than 325 rootwads were installed and 15 acres of riverbank were restored to support wildlife + lower flood risks.
