ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State Police reported that an 86-year-old Constantine man driving an SUV attempted a left turn from Youngs Prairie Road without yielding and was fatally struck by a southbound RV Thursday at 8 p.m.—the 48-year-old RV driver from Caledonia sustained only minor injuries and no drugs or alcohol were suspected. - ➤ Potbelly Sandwich Works will open next month at 4608 Stadium Drive next to Starbucks, marking the county’s first Potbelly location. The new shop takes over the space once used by Jimmy John’s, which moved earlier this year — contractors are finalizing updates. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 22-year-old Battle Creek man was arrested for armed robbery when deputies responded around 6:30 a.m. Friday in Comstock Township after he allegedly stole a bicycle from a younger male at the intersection of Gull Road and Sprinkle Road — he reportedly tossed his gun when officers arrived — and he now awaits arraignment in Kalamazoo County Jail while facing additional warrants. - ➤ Kalamazoo Public Schools is hosting free back-to-school events to help families get school supplies before classes resume. Today, families can visit the Back to School Bash at Family Health Center at 117 W Patterson St. from noon to 6—while the Beyond the Backpack event runs in Bronson Park from 11 to 2 with free food, resources, and support. - ➤ The Kalamazoo Public Schools board approved superintendent Darrin Slade's new strategic plan that sets six goals for everyone in the district. Dr. Slade said he will share timelines and next steps at the upcoming board meeting and the full plan is now on the district website. WKZO
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Twenty Michigan beaches are closed or under contamination advisories due to high bacteria levels making the water unsafe for swimming — the list includes Robert Morris Park in Kalamazoo County, among others. Officials update the beach statuses regularly and urge visitors to check current conditions before planning a trip. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City of Kalamazoo officials said that a boil water advisory will be issued next week for homes on Humphrey Street, Seemore Avenue and Wayside Road when water is shut off starting Tuesday for valve replacement and water infrastructure repairs. Residents should boil water for two minutes before drinking and follow posted detours via Gull Road, Riverview Drive, East Michigan Avenue and East Main Street — repairs are expected to finish by Thursday. - ➤ Family Health Center hosted a free Back-to-School Bash last Friday at its Paterson Street campus, offering backpacks, school supplies, immunizations and checkups for children from ages 3 to 12.
