ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A sanitary sewer lift station in Parchment overflowed on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.—city officials said about 30 gallons of sewage spilled and the area was remediated by 8 p.m. WWMT
- ➤ A high-speed crash into a downtown building on East Michigan Avenue occurred Wednesday morning when a 22-year-old driver suffered cuts and was treated and released from a local hospital, while four other car passengers remained unharmed and a sixth person fled—investigators are examining alcohol and excessive speed as factors as repairs to the building continue. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The City of Kalamazoo announced that starting Monday, crews will replace valves on Humphrey Street between Albert Avenue and Fenimore Avenue and will keep the road closed until work ends on Thursday. Drivers must use the detour on Gull Road to Riverview Drive to East Michigan Avenue to East Main Street until repairs finish. WWMT
- ➤ Kalamazoo Public Safety suspended mask use by officers after community members raised concerns that masked raids could be mistaken for immigration actions—Public Safety Chief Dave Boysen said the change was made immediately, and the county sheriff will restrict mask use going forward. WKZO
- ➤ Kalamazoo County officials said that after discussions with ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) they made clear that the county and city are not sanctuaries. Sheriff Rick Fuller and County Commissioner Monteze Morales added that this decision helps avoid a target on their back and keeps local law enforcement following state and local requirements. WKZO
- ➤ Fifteen Hmong refugees detained in July were told to report to an ICE office in Detroit for an immigration hearing but were detained instead + state lawmakers Rep. Emily Dievendorf, Rep. Mai Xiong, Sen. Stephanie Chang and Sen. Sam Singh will speak at 10 a.m. today to ask for more transparency. WWMT
