COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Kalamazoo will host the third annual Dogs in the Zoo event at the Kalamazoo Mall on Saturday, Aug. 9, where pet adoptions + splash pads, agility zones, pup cups and paw print crafts will bring fun for pet owners from noon to 4 p.m. Organizers have planned hourly activities including a hot dog eating contest and a dog look-alike contest + a 'Show Off Your Dog' showcase to add extra excitement throughout the day.  MLive
  • KVET suspended its mask policy on officers after community concerns emerged at the City Commission meeting, effective August 5th + officers can now wear masks only when working undercover + officials said they may revisit the policy to rebuild trust.  WWMT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new wind flow from the southwest has pushed Canadian wildfire smoke away from Michigan as air quality alerts have already been dropped in some areas, and experts predict that statewide alerts will be removed today + warn that the smoke may return if the winds shift again.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After community criticism, Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team officers stopped using masks. Public Safety Chief David Boysen said the change was implemented on Aug. 5 — officials may review the policy if circumstances change.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo’s search for a new city manager entered its public phase today as residents fill out an online survey or stop by City Hall to share desired manager qualities. A special City Committee meeting is set for Monday at 5 p.m.—survey submissions close August 24th as the city prepares to replace longtime manager Jim Ritsema, who retires this fall.  WKZO
  • Kalamazoo County commissioners will reclaim $400,000 in ARPA funds tonight after Young Kings and Queens failed to launch a planned financial literacy program—using the money instead to replace old plumbing at the county Health and Human Services building on Alcott.  WKZO
  • Northbound U.S. 131 will close from 10 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday for three weekends in August while crews install a bridge as part of an interchange expansion. A detour ramp will direct traffic from northbound U.S. 131 to the business route, and the work will finish in November 2025—providing a new connection to downtown.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Kalamazoo hosts the USTA Boys National Tennis Tournament, a national event held here for over sixty years. Young players compete this week and champions in the 16 and 18 divisions will be crowned this weekend to earn automatic berths to the US Open, with tickets ranging from $10 to $100.  WKZO
