COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The intersection at Portage Street and Washington Avenue will be closed from August 7 through August 11 for a mural installation and retimed traffic signals to create a new pedestrian scramble crossing. The Edison Neighborhood Association and artist Patrick Hershberger lead the project and have arranged a detour for drivers while volunteers can sign up to help paint — a local effort to refresh the area.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out Monday morning at a condemned property on North Burdick Street near East Frank Street — KDPS advised residents to avoid the area while they investigated the incident.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 32-year-old passenger in a vehicle on Florence Street was struck in the head by gunfire Sunday afternoon and sustained minor injuries; police responded at 5:41 p.m. and are still investigating the incident.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Portage Public Schools superintendent Johnny Edwards will host a meet-and-greet with community members at the Portage Zhang Senior Center at 203 East Centre Avenue from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 21—he will also hold Listening and Learning Sessions soon as part of his first 90 days on the job.  WKZO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfire smoke from uncontrolled and controlled fires across the Canadian border has triggered air quality alerts in every county, including Kalamazoo—residents are advised to take precautions as light winds have kept pollutants near the ground. Meteorologists say a southerly flow on Thursday and Friday should help clear the skies.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan is holding its August Primary today with polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 8 p.m. News Channel 3 is tracking 33 West Michigan races—ranging from school funding proposals to local millage renewals.  WWMT
  • Residents in Kalamazoo can fill out a survey online or get a paper copy from city offices or community events—like National Night Out—to help choose the next city manager as current manager James Ritsema retires on Nov. 18. The survey is open until Aug. 24 and will help officials ensure a transparent and public selection process.  WWMT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kalamazoo’s Police Athletic League — in partnership with the Detroit Lions — hosted a two-day youth football camp over the weekend, marking the third year for the event and promising fall training with collegiate and professional athletes. The program aims to build positive connections between kids and police.  WKZO
