Good morning, Kalamazoo. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 4th of August.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ More than 100 motorcyclists rode in honor of first responders in Calhoun County on Sunday — a show of local support — while Kalamazoo prepares to convert an 80-room hotel into Michigan’s largest family homeless shelter by December. A 36-year-old woman was reported missing on I-69 after being picked up by an unknown person, a local driver training school cancelled its upcoming sessions after finishing July classes, and three people will face charges after a man is stabbed in Kalamazoo. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo County is looking for a large site to expand its Household Hazardous Waste Center because the current facility near the County Fairgrounds is too small for new materials like mattresses, appliances, and high-tech batteries — the county board has approved funding for studies and planning to find a site that may cover two to three full city blocks and serve more communities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Kalamazoo city commissioners will vote tonight to create a new authority to own and run a $30 million youth sports facility on the west side. The board—with an Oshtemo representative—will begin planning at the Westgate site as county funding and support are in place. WKZO
