- ➤ Mothers of Hope held their sixth annual Walk to Celebrate Recovery Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Northside Association for Community Development—NACD—in Kalamazoo where community members celebrated recovery, resilience and hope. WWMT
- ➤ Arturo Puckerin became executive director of the Kalamazoo Eastside Neighborhood Association on Aug. 1, 2024 — he quickly launched a six-month pilot program offering $500 for car repairs to ALICE families while also running food and diaper distributions. He bought three long-vacant properties on East Main Street and plans to fix them for new local businesses — a move aimed at cutting blight and boosting jobs. MLive
- ➤ A 3-year-old Frenchie Bulldog mix named Sweet Potato at the SPCA of Southwest Michigan in Kalamazoo is looking for her forever home—she loves snuggling and gentle kisses. SPCA Executive Director Katie Timber said a studio photo taken on August 1 shows the loving dog ready to bring joy to a new family. WWMT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Archival negatives taken by photographer Jerry Campbell were found in the Gazette's storage and show Ozzy Osbourne performing at Wings Stadium on Feb. 9, 1982 with guitarist Randy Rhoads. The photos capture one of Rhoads’ final shows, which took place just weeks before his fatal plane crash on March 19, 1982—images released after Ozzy Osbourne’s death last week. MLive

- ➤ Kalamazoo Public Safety will join community members for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5 in several neighborhoods across the city where residents can enjoy family-friendly activities, food, and public safety demonstrations — the event is designed to strengthen ties between locals and police. - ➤ City of Kalamazoo will begin an airborne survey next week over well fields in Texas, Oshtem, Comstock, and Ross Townships to map underground aquifers and help safeguard drinking water. A helicopter will fly in a grid pattern at 100 feet up over open areas — not over homes or buildings. WKZO

- ➤ Canadian wildfire smoke has covered parts of the Midwest and triggered air quality alerts in Michigan—officials say the smoke will persist today. Health experts advise people with lung issues, children and older adults to limit outdoor activity until conditions improve. WWMT
