- ➤ Kik Pool in Kalamazoo will remain open through Friday, August 15 after officials extended the season to make up for a June delay caused by a lifeguard trainer withdrawal. The pool offers daily lap swim and open swim sessions—closed on July 25 and August 7 for summer camps—with an extra Aqua Fitness class on August 12. WKZO

- ➤ Patrick Martin, who is headed to prison for supplying a fatal drug to a friend, arrived on July 16 at prison - he said one minute can change your life. MLive

- ➤ The WK Kellogg Bird Sanctuary has offered nearly 100 years of peaceful nature walks on its three-mile trail and care for injured birds (hawks, eagles, owls, pheasants, and quail) in Hickory Corners. Nearby, the WK Kellogg House sits atop Gull Lake and welcomes visitors to tour its historic rooms and learn about Kellogg’s legacy, including his military loan and marketing talents. WWMT

- ➤ The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights is investigating eight WMU scholarships after a complaint alleged they discriminate based on race, color, national origin and sex—officials said the review aims to give all students a fair chance to receive aid. MLive
- ➤ On Dec. 9, 2023, Kalamazoo College laid off 11 staff members for financial reasons, affecting both hourly and salaried, part-time and full-time workers. - ➤ Cooling centers are open in West Michigan today—Ministry with Community at 500 North Edwards Street in Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Gospel Mission at 448 North Burdick Street, which opens when temperatures hit 95 and provides lunch, offer cold drinks, snacks and Wi‑Fi to help residents beat the heat; additional centers in Portage, Allegan and Grand Rapids also serve as safe spaces under the Heat Advisory. - ➤ Health experts warned that nicotine poisoning cases among young children have sharply increased in West Michigan since 2020—data from MiPDC show over 100 cases statewide and 18 in Kalamazoo with nine hospitalizations, including three severe enough for critical care.
