- ➤ Pastor Gregory Jennings opened the gun storage case at Progressive Deliverance Ministries on July 20 to allow residents to drop off firearms without giving personal information. Over the nine months since the program began last October, nearly a dozen guns have been collected to help keep them from falling into the wrong hands — a measure aimed at reducing local gun violence. - ➤ Maple Hill Auto Group in Oshtemo Township plans a major expansion that will grow its dealership from West Main Street and add a new Subaru dealership on 11 acres where the Westside Medical Building stood— the project is expected to create at least 31 new jobs and has prompted a county request for brownfield participation funding, with a public hearing set for August 19th. - ➤ Construction is underway for a Panda Express restaurant at 4300 W. Main St on the west side, and a tentative opening is set for late October; the fast-casual venue, built on a former Huntington Bank site, will offer drive-thru and dine-in options with the latest Panda Home design—red lanterns and a moon gate portal—and add nearly 40 jobs. - ➤ Myquan Rogers, 31, pleaded no contest to killing college student Naya Reynolds with a stolen AR-15; his sentencing was pushed from July 21 to Monday morning after delays. WWMT
- ➤ 23-year-old Isaiah Willhite was convicted by a Kalamazoo jury for home invasion and murder in the June 2021 shooting death of Gerryon Kye and will be sentenced on August 15 — a second suspect remains at large. WKZO
- ➤ The sentencing of Myquan Deontae Rogers, 34, who pled no contest for killing WMU student Naya Reynolds in August 2022, has been postponed again as his defense seeks to withdraw the plea due to new details on his juvenile record — prosecutors oppose the move and plan to take the case to trial if the plea is withdrawn — and he is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 18 if the plea stands. - ➤ The Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center at 6151 Portage Rd. opened its immersive exhibit, Extreme Sports: Beyond Human Limits, which uses hands-on challenges to show how extreme athletes prepare mentally and physically—visitors can explore interactive tests and hear athlete stories until Oct. 31. - ➤ Gas prices across Michigan dropped 12 cents a gallon this week—Triple-A Michigan reports an average of $3.15 per gallon, a 15-cent decrease from last month and a 50-cent drop from last year. In Kalamazoo County, drivers pay about $3.11 a gallon while other counties show varied rates. WKZO

- ➤ State Representative Julie Rogers announced Monday that she is running for the Michigan Senate in District 19 after incumbent Sean McCann decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives. Rogers, a Kalamazoo-based healthcare provider who has served since 2020, said she will focus on healthcare—education, housing and environmental protections if elected. WWMT

- ➤ The Kalamazoo Community Foundation announced that it will distribute $1.5M in opioid settlement funds to area nonprofits over the next three years to support treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and prevention services for residents facing opioid use disorder in partnership with the county.
