  • WWMT-TV Newschannel 3 reported that a teen died after being hit while riding a dirt bike in Cass County on Friday at about 12:30 p.m.—body camera footage also showed the arrest of a deputy fire chief on June 22 and research underway at a local blueberry breeding facility. Kalamazoo County erased $2.5M in medical debt for over 7,200 residents, a food drive by the Kalamazoo Growlers and Comerica Bank is planned, an annual report noted rising homelessness to its highest rate since 2011, severe storms are expected Saturday afternoon, and a man was hospitalized in Oshtemo Township after a vehicle collision.  WWMT

  • On Saturday morning at about 6:20 a.m., gunfire injured two Kalamazoo men near the 800 block of Woodbury Avenue+ both were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening wounds.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On July 17, Kalamazoo Public Schools approved a $115,357 purchase of six new weapon detectors to cover all entrances at the four middle schools and three high schools. The new policy will require all students to walk through the detectors starting in the 2025-26 school year and was funded by a state Security & Safety/Mental Health Grant.  MLive
  • A state representative has reintroduced a bill to let Michigan schools offer cursive training because most kids use computers for writing; officials say knowing cursive is vital for signing ballots and reading historical documents.  WWMT
