  • New renderings show a detailed view of the 450,000 square foot Kalamazoo Event Center at 411 W. Kalamazoo Ave. It will open in fall 2027 and cost $515 million—designed to host WMU hockey, basketball, concerts, conferences and more with dedicated practice spaces and premium clubs.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kroger has introduced digital coupon flyers in all Michigan stores this month so shoppers who are not rewards members can also save money on groceries. Customers scan the flyer at checkout—self or manned—to have digital discounts applied automatically.  MLive
  • Schultz’s Treat Street — known for its historic mural — will close at 3023 Oakland Drive at the end of July as owner Erin Schultz shifts focus to her catering business and family needs, and she hopes to sell the location to keep its legacy alive.  MLive
  • New Way Thrift Store—run by national nonprofit Youth for Christ—opened Tuesday, July 15 at 7017 S Westnedge Ave and accepts donations of clothing, furniture, electronics and more to serve the busy Portage shopping hub.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police Director Colonel James Grady sidestepped a question about resigning after troopers held a no-confidence vote yesterday — he said he remains committed to keeping Michigan safe. Two trooper groups filed a complaint questioning his integrity while Governor Gretchen Whitmer continues to support him.  WKZO
  • Yesterday, Thomas Durlach, an independent candidate and Kalamazoo resident, announced his bid for an open seat on the City Commission to tackle economic challenges, homelessness, and public safety. Durlach (a father, engineer and 32-year local) said he will bring real leadership and practical solutions ahead of the municipal election on November 4.  WWMT
  • Drew Duncan announced his bid for an open seat on the Kalamazoo City Commission on July 16 and said he will work to build affordable housing—he also aims to support small businesses and improve neighborhood safety ahead of the November 4 election.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department released its 2024 tick test results, showing seven out of 24 ticks carried Borrelia burgdorferi — the bacteria that causes Lyme disease — and one tick carried Anaplasma phagocytophilum, which can lead to anaplasmosis.  WWMT
