- ➤ Kalamazoo Community Foundation will distribute $1.5 million in opioid settlement funds to local nonprofits over the next three years to support treatment, recovery, harm reduction, and prevention services, partnering with Kalamazoo County government (the funds come from national settlements with drug makers and distributors). - ➤ Kalamazoo's Community Homeworks received $150,000 from the Consumers Energy Foundation for its People Award and will use the funds to provide critical home repairs, educational workshops, and a tool library for vulnerable households. Executive director Chris Praedel said the grant strengthens the Safe Start Home Repair Program—focusing on families with expectant mothers and young children. WKZO

- ➤ On Monday, July 14, police evacuated Fort Custer Recreation Area after a man with a gun was found near the beach and later fatally shot himself—authorities said he had not threatened others while negotiators tried to help him. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Perseids meteor shower will start July 17 and run through Aug. 23, with its peak on Aug. 12—Aug. 13 when 50 to 100 meteors will light the sky. Particles from comet Swift-Tuttle will hit Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, and early viewers may spot meteors as soon as 10 p.m. WWMT
- ➤ The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo has chosen seven local artists for the 2025 Brush the Block mural festival, which will run from September 2nd through 7th—each artist will paint murals in downtown Kalamazoo to connect the community. WKZO

- ➤ Brooke Bronsink, a Southwest Michigan mother who nearly lost her young son to burns but now sees him thriving at 12, started East Leroy Goats and Yoga on her farm after a goat made her laugh with a funny toot.
