FINANCE NEWS

  • Triple-A Michigan reported that average gas prices rose by 12-cents to $3.27 a gallon this week; a 15-gallon fill-up costs about $49—local prices range from $3.29 in Kalamazoo County to $3.33 in Saginaw and $3.06 in Marquette.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport officials announced that work to extend the runway by 450 feet at Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport will begin next spring and finish by fall 2026 thanks to a $14.1 million federal grant—supporting projects on the taxiway, blast pad, lighting and more to boost safety.  WKZO
  • Today, the Kalamazoo County board is set to appoint an authority board to manage the new youth sports facility on the west side of Kalamazoo; the board will review 11 nominees from the county, city, and Discover Kalamazoo—including local sports officials, a Southwest Michigan First representative, hotel executives, and an Oshtemo Township supervisor—on a consent agenda that may pass without discussion.  WKZO
  • State Senator Sean McCann—who served on the Kalamazoo City Commission for 10 years before joining the state House and Senate—announced his run for U.S. Congress Monday, July 14 in an online statement.  MLive
  • State lawmakers resume budget talks today after a two-week break over school funding disagreements. The Senate wants to pass the full budget while the House plans to start with school and road funding, and House Speaker Matt Hall offered extra earmarks—lawmakers hope the action will reduce the risk of a government shutdown after missing the July 1 deadline.  WKZO
  • Since the beginning of the year, city officials held sessions with stakeholders to gather ideas for a park that is both family-friendly and flexible for year-round events. Deputy City Manager Rebekah Kik said the revamp plan—featuring two performance stages, new amenities, and better access to Arcadia Creek—and a budget with about $4 million set aside plus future fundraising will be finalized by fall and completed in a few years.  WKZO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hartford Bakery has recalled 883 loaves of Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style half loaf bread sold at Meijer, Walmart, and Kroger due to undeclared hazelnuts that could trigger severe allergic reactions. The recalled loaves — bearing specific lot codes and an expiration date of July 13th — should be returned to the store for a full refund.  MLive
