Good morning, Kalamazoo. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 12th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City leaders proposed building between 140 and 200 affordable homes on a 15 acre lot near Stockbridge Road in the Edison Neighborhood if the project is approved. They will meet with Edison Neighborhood Association officials and hold a community feedback meeting and expect homes could be ready in three to five years — a move to revitalize a vacant and blighted property.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • City officials have partially extended the boil water advisory issued after a private line separation at Mid-Link Business Park to customers near Milham Park and Loy Norrix High School—customers must use bottled water or boil it for at least two minutes. Officials are testing water samples with initial results expected today and final results on Sunday, and they plan to lift the advisory on Monday once safe sample requirements are met.  WWMT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Greenleaf Hospitality Group said the new downtown Kalamazoo Event Center, now under construction at 411 West Kalamazoo Avenue, will open in 2027 to host Western Michigan University basketball and hockey and Kalamazoo Wings events. The $300-million arena will replace Lawson Ice Arena, University Arena, and Wings Event Center and will seat 6,500 for sports and 8,000 for concerts.  WKZO
