CRIME NEWS

  • Kalamazoo police say 34-year-old Leetrail Lamont Bible was fatally shot around 3 a.m. on Saturday, July 5 on West Paterson Street while officers monitored a large crowd — two other men sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.  MLive
  • Morgan Scott Parish, a 58-year-old from Van Buren County, faces 18 felony charges for throwing pipe bombs at police during an armed standoff on July 4 in Kendall as he ignited an explosive in his RV and is held on a $5 million bond—charges include terrorism, assault with intent to murder, and other serious offenses—while officers safely ended the standoff with no injuries.  WWMT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan are 11¢ cheaper this week as Triple-A Michigan reports the state average is now $3.15; in Kalamazoo County, gas costs $3.08 while metro Detroit is at $3.20 and Marquette has the lowest price at $3.00.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Most Kalamazoo Public Schools students are on summer break, but summer school starts today for 300 students who need extra help in core subjects. Classes will run through the end of July and provide free transportation, breakfast + lunch.  WKZO
  • WMU is redesigning the main campus entry at 1903 W. Michigan Ave as a pedestrian space and will install a new archway on West Michigan Ave in August to welcome students for fall. Parking lots were removed in early July and the project will add new wide walkways, seating areas and green space.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Kalamazoo revealed a finalized design for a revamped Arcadia Creek Festival Place during a Monday city commission meeting and will begin construction next spring once bids are accepted and updated estimates are shared in September—developers plan flexible event spaces, a community park area along the creek, and collapsible fencing for special events. City staff also discussed a housing plan for Stockbridge Avenue that could add 170 new units to the Edison Neighborhood.  WWMT
  • Today, rolling lane closures begin on South Westnedge Avenue in Portage for a fiber installation project that will affect the southbound curb lane from Milham Avenue to J L Hudson Drive near The Crossroads mall – drivers should use alternate routes to avoid delays. The work will be completed on July 10, weather and materials permitting.  MLive
  • MDOT announced updates on a major US-131 construction project in Kalamazoo — the on-ramp from Stadium Drive to northbound US-131 will reopen Wednesday, July 9 and single-lane closures will affect both directions between West Main Street and Stadium Drive from today until Friday, July 11. Northbound drivers will use the completed bridge over KL Avenue while southbound vehicles will use a temporary bridge until a new one opens in late October.  WWMT

  • Former MLB All-Star Brandon Inge signed a one-day head coaching contract with the Kalamazoo Growlers for the game on July 10 at Homer Stryker Field and will set the lineup, coach first base, and prepare the team. The event will feature a special 313 promotion—$3 hot dogs, $1 popcorn, and $3 beers—as well as an online memorabilia auction to support the Jr. Growlers Baseball Academy while Inge meets fans after the game.  WKZO
