COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Over 550 runners joined Kathy's Run for Cancer on July 4 at Gull Lake High School to raise money for cancer research, education and scholarships — proceeds were given to the Bronson Cancer Center and West Michigan Cancer Center. The race was renamed from the Rose Run to honor Kathy Kollig, who was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, and it also helped fund a scholarship for a nursing student. WWMT
- ➤ Schoolcraft canceled its official Fourth of July parade because of a police officer shortage, so dozens joined a smaller march led by the American Legion last Friday. Local organizers promise to restore the full parade next year—while the village still holds its fireworks show tonight. WWMT
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A three-year-old was pulled from Gull Lake and given CPR by a Richland police officer before medics took the toddler to a hospital last Friday — the child's condition remains undisclosed to respect the family's privacy. WWMT
- ➤ A house caught fire in Oshtemo Township Friday night on Pine Acres Drive near Forest View Drive—fire departments from Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo Township, Texas Township and Mattawan responded to battle the flames. WWMT
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On July 4, law enforcement near Kendall responded to a suspect with a felony warrant who barricaded himself in an RV, set off a pipe bomb, and threw a second one at officers; they used tear gas and a less lethal gun to subdue him—he was taken to a hospital for treatment and will face charges. WWMT
- ➤ Two people were arrested on July 2 after search warrants in Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Township found drugs, a firearm and cash associated with drug sales—on Colgrove Avenue officers recovered an ounce of cocaine and 1 3/4 pound of marijuana while on Alexander Street over 3 ounces of crack cocaine were seized—with one suspect fleeing on foot before being caught and both now facing multiple felony charges.
