COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portage will host a centenarian brunch on July 24 at 11 a.m. at the Portage Zhang Senior Center on 203 East Centre Avenue. Centenarians and those turning 100 this year may bring up to two guests free and must reserve a spot by calling 269-329-4555.  WKZO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Michigan University began demolishing Vandercook Hall, an 86-year-old, vacant residence hall at 800 Oakland Dr. behind Waldo Stadium that was built in 1939 — hazardous material abatement started on May 27 and no plans have been announced for the site.  MLive
  • Kalamazoo Public Schools will add pilot courses to the fall curriculum after the board approved teacher and principal recommendations—these courses will offer extra help for middle school students, new cultural programs, computer coding classes and an AP prep course at Kalamazoo Central.  WKZO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced that the infamous barge has been moved to a legal location in West Grand Traverse Bay after owner Don Balcom sold it on June 23—this ends a five-year legal saga that began after the vessel sank and released oil in November 2020.  WWMT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, July 7, portions of North Westnedge Ave between Michikal and West Michigan Ave will be closed until August 15 for Arcadia Creek relocation, sanitary, and upgraded water main work, and a second phase will close the section from Michikal to West Water Street until year-end while leaving the southbound lane open from West Water Street to West Michigan Ave—motorists should follow posted detours.  WWMT
  • Keshia Dickason, the first African American woman road commissioner, announced her bid for Kalamazoo City Commissioner while serving her fifth year of a six-year term—her campaign, called H.E.R. for Housing, Environment, and Redevelopment, will hold a celebration on July 10 at Thunderbird of Kalamazoo at 6 p.m.  WWMT
