BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpartanNash, a West Michigan grocery chain in Byron Township, is being sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers for $1.77 billion — a 52.5% premium over last week’s price. The deal awaits shareholder and federal approval and will close later this year, with C&S planning to keep operating SpartanNash’s stores and service centers.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kalamazoo man, Robert Lofton (55), was charged with murder after admitting he shot his wife Sariah Robinson (47) on Woodward Avenue on June 12 during a domestic dispute; he later shot himself and now faces charges for felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.  WWMT
  • A 21-year-old man was arrested on June 17 by the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team after officers received a tip via Silent Observer+ he was caught after a brief foot chase near 1000 Bock of Claymoor Drive in Oshtemo Township while carrying a loaded handgun reported stolen earlier this year.  WKZO
  • A group of six boys dined and dashed from an IHOP on Westnedge on June 23 before firing shots at the parking lot, breaking two windows and damaging a car — no one was injured, Portage officials said.  WWMT
  • Portage police announced that 34-year-old Kaleb Michael Shaffer was arrested in Rapid City on June 4 after the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office charged him on June 2 with armed robbery at several Aldi stores, including one in Portage — he is now held at Kalamazoo County Jail with bond denied.  WWMT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Greensky Bluegrass, a Kalamazoo band that began in 2000, will celebrate 25 years with headlining shows at Wings Event Center on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1—marking a homecoming that honors their origins. The band promises a unique Halloween experience with creative performance themes to engage longtime fans.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kalamazoo Public Schools board unanimously approved next school year's budget and now must wait to see if state funds will cover expenses — Finance director Laura Kayser said concerns include a lower rainy day fund compared to the state average with plans to adjust if needed.  WKZO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Senate passed bipartisan road safety legislation on Tuesday, with bills proposed by Kalamazoo’s McCann and Lowell’s Thomas Albert to raise penalties for drivers who hit pedestrians, bicyclists, wheelchair users and postal workers—updating the 'move over' law for stationary vehicles with flashing lights. The bills now head to the House for deliberation.  WKZO
