BUSINESS NEWS

  • Businesses in Portage closed Monday after a strong odor from rotting meat emerged from a faulty freezer at Maui Poke — several shop owners reported losses from the shutdown. Maui Poke’s owner said the issue was fixed and that she will work with health officials as the restaurant reopens today.  WWMT

CRIME NEWS

  • On June 17, officers arrested a 21-year-old man on Claymoor Drive near South Drake Road in Oshtemo Township after he tried to flee following a tip from Kalamazoo Silent Observer—he was found with a loaded stolen firearm and now faces multiple felony charges.  WWMT
  • Robert Nizzardini, 59, was sentenced yesterday to a minimum of 28 years, 1 month in prison and a maximum of 50 years for second-degree murder—he shot his ex-girlfriend and left her to die in a garage for over two hours.  MLive
  • Marvin Delaney Humphrey, 54, pleaded no contest on Monday, June 23, to second-degree murder for strangling frail 68-year-old Minette Weaver and was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Paul J. Bridenstine to 18 to 40 years in prison — his sentence includes credit for 144 days served.  MLive
  • Robert H. Lofton, 55, was charged with murder for fatally shooting his wife, Sariah Robinson, 47, on June 12 on Woodward Avenue near West Paterson Street—he faces additional charges of felony firearm, felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon after a hospital stay for self-inflicted gunshot wounds.  WWMT
  • A Kalamazoo man 20-year-old Jaymre Cameron Thompson was sentenced by Judge Rebecca J. D’Angelo in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court to 10 to 15 years in prison for manslaughter in the 2024 fatal shooting of 53-year-old Mark Jackson on Interfaith Boulevard and also received additional felony firearm charges and resisting a police officer—resulting in $7,700 in restitution and court costs—after his conviction in April.  WKZO
  • A 37-year-old man was taken to the hospital after being stabbed Monday morning—just after 3 a.m. on the 1000 block of South Rose Street in Kalamazoo— and police have taken a suspect into custody with no reported danger to the public.  WWMT
