CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday just after 1 p.m., a suspect died from a medical emergency after assaulting a concrete crew on South Main Street in Climax Township—witnesses restrained him and crew members sustained non-life threatening injuries while police and medics responded.  WWMT
  • Kalamazoo police reported a decline in weekend X-Train parties after the city updated its Mobile Nuisance Party ordinance—this change now makes it easier to impound vehicles that disrupt traffic and delay emergency responses.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The playground at Congress Elementary in Sturgis was named fourth on a national list of the top 10 inclusive playgrounds, showing its design helps all kids play. In 2019, the school used a $1.75 million fund to add ramps and a special tile surface so every student can enjoy the playground.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Holtec received its fourth loan disbursement from the DOE on Friday, June 20 to help restart the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert & the installment was $100,451,904. The plant is expected to reopen by the end of 2025 pending NRC approvals and will create about 1,000 jobs during periodic maintenance cycles.  WWMT
  • Today, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Services and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety will open hydrants at several locations from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. to help residents cool off during the heat wave — officials advise calling 311 or 269-337-8000 if an unlisted hydrant is found open.  WWMT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents across West Michigan are preparing for an extreme heat wave that will last from today into next week, and cooling centers in Kalamazoo County, including Kalamazoo Gospel Ministries, will open if temperatures rise above safe levels — local doctors warn that children and older people are at higher risk for heat-related illness.  WWMT

  • Ten Kalamazoo-area high school baseball players earned all-state honors from the MHSBCA after playing in a doubleheader on April 16 at Kalamazoo Christian High School — their achievement reflects the strong baseball tradition in our community.  MLive
  • Thirty-three Kalamazoo-area girls soccer players earned all-state honors for 2025 from the MHSSCA after playing in the Division 4 state championship on June 14 — a sign of the strong local soccer talent.  MLive
