- ➤ The city of Kalamazoo has opened Kik Pool for the 2025 season — the opening was delayed to secure a new trainer for lifeguards. The pool is at Upjohn Park off Walter Street and offers seasonal and day passes. WKZO
- ➤ City officials announced the Westgate site has been chosen for Kalamazoo’s future $40 million indoor youth and amateur sports facility because it is accessible and allows for expansion— the facility is set to open no later than 2028 and will feature eight basketball courts, 16 volleyball courts and an indoor turn field. - ➤ Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies said Fifth Third Bank at 6040 Stadium Drive was broken into just before 3 a.m. on Wednesday and the suspect—a thin man in black clothing with white socks—fled the scene while K-9 and drone units searched for him. WKZO
- ➤ Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputies reported that a man broke into Fifth Third Bank on Stadium Drive in Oshtemo Township early June 18th at 2:50 a.m.—the search for the suspect is underway. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A WMU mural designed by alumnus Brad Zenz — painted by students as part of a summer immersive course — turned heads at Campus Pointe mall on June 18, featuring images of WMU athletes, the school seal and a vintage logo at the intersection of Howard Street and Michigan Avenue. The artwork reflects the hands-on experience offered to students in the course taught by Heidi Weiss. WWMT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney General Dana Nessel said her office will explore legal options to restore federal grants that were cut on April 1, leaving foster children without critical support after a roundtable with State Representative Hillary Scholten and CASA advocates from counties including Kalamazoo. Local CASA leaders warned that the funding loss may reduce volunteer training and support—potentially leaving some children without a constant caretaker in times of need. WWMT

- ➤ Health officials said Michigan reached its lowest infant mortality rate in history in 2023 with 6.1 deaths per 1,000 births, a drop from 6.2 in 2021.
